In-Depth Description

White Meadowsweet is a deciduous New England native shrub. It differs from its other native cousin, Steeplebush (Spiraea tomentosa) by having hairless leaves. Both Spring and Summer Azure butterflies inhabit woodland edges and openings, and readily visit garden flowers, both locations ideal for this versatile native. Prefers moister conditions and is best planted in a rain garden or along streams, watercourses, and wetlands in both disturbed and undisturbed areas, providing late summer food for habitat. Fruits appear in fall dispensing seeds attractive to birds.
