Standing Ovation Little Bluestem

$25.00

Latin Name : Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Standing Ovation

Bluish-green, upright foliage changes to a beautiful display of orange, red, yellow, and purple foliage in fall. Its seed heads are prized by native songbirds, and its stems provide winter landscape interest and cover for birds and other native critters. Thrives in poor, dry soil.

In-Depth Description

Schizachyrium scoparium, commonly called Little Bluestem, is native to prairies, fields, clearings, hills, limestone glades, and open woods from Canada south to Arizona and Florida. It was one of the dominant grasses of the vast tallgrass prairie region which once covered rich and fertile soils in many parts of central North America. ‘Standing Ovation’ is a cultivar that features blue leaf blades with red tips. Leaf blades are wider than those found on straight-species plants. It was discovered as a naturally occurring whole plant mutation in Landenberg, Pennsylvania in the summer of 2003.
