Granny Smith Apple Tree

$85.00

Latin Name : Malus ‘Granny Smith

One of the best cooking apples, Granny Smith has crisp, tart, and juicy fruit with a good balance of acids and sugars. Also popular for fresh eating. Medium-sized apples have pale to medium green skin with distinctive whitish dots. Granny Smith has a late picking season and a long shelf life.

In-Depth Description

The Granny Smith Apple originated from a chance seedling in Australia in 1868. Maria Ann “Granny” Smith was cooking with French crab apples and discarded the remains in a compost pile behind her house. A chance seedling emerged from the pile. Granny Smith liked the new apple that grew so much she decided to propagate it herself. In the 1890s, it gained national attention as the “best cooking apple”. It wasn’t until the 1970s that this apple finally reached the United States, where it is now grown domestically.
