In-Depth Description

Silky dogwood is the host plant for the spring/summer Azure butterflies. Fruits are eaten by songbirds, ruffed grouse, quail, turkey, chipmunks, black bears, foxes, white-tailed deer, skunks, and squirrels. Its growth habit is upright, rounded, and where stems are in contact with the ground, roots are formed. This behavior creates thickets, thus making this native a good selection for moist woodlands, naturalized areas, along streams and ponds, or for erosion control.
