In-Depth Description

This showy shrub offers a superb alternative to boxwood or holly, with its blazing red new foliage and long lasting colorful foliage and habitat friendly blooms. The genus name honors Leucothoe, one of the many loves of Apollo. The species name axillaris comes from the fact that the flowers emerge from the leaf axils. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators and are suitable for a butterfly or pollinator garden, as well as rock gardens. Native to Virginia down through Florida.
