In-Depth Description

Buttonbush flowers are unique, covered with dozens of round-headed “pistils” that look like pincushions. They are unique and almost Dr. Seuss-like, frequented by Skippers, Monarchs, and virtually any butterflies that happen to be passing by. The dark red-brown fruit that follow the flowers last through the winter, and the seeds that fall are a particular favorite of waterfowl like ducks and loons. Summer foliage is rich and full, providing shelter for birds. Cultivars have been developed for smaller-sized backyard gardens, as well as different color foliage but retain the habitat friendly qualities. Spent blooms form 1”-diameter red orbs for fall interest, with large round summer fruits that attract songbirds.
